Craig Shepard, composer
Since 2015 Mary has been advising composer Craig Shepard on a special project called Broken Silence. Broken Silence is a music composition performed with narration, but more than that, it's a healing space for those affected by sexual abuse in the Catholic Church or anyone seeking healing.
The rationale behind the title of this new evening-length piece by the composer and improviser Craig Shepard is twofold. As a member of the globe-spanning Wandelweiser collective, Shepard hews to an aesthetic in which sound and space are held in a fragile equilibrium. But “Broken Silence” also refers to victims of sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church, whose testimonies are a central part of this meditative chamber work meant to facilitate contemplation and healing. -Steve Smith
Broken Silence has had several performances in New York City, at first, private performances to test the work and observe the behavior of the "room." There have now been a series of well-attended public performances. You can read more about Broken Silence here.
